Sargent Joey,

Let there be no mistake that I am a Patriotic American and would do anything to assist our fine servicemen overseas, including the securitization of possibly misappropriated funds for your (my) benefit.  You can trust me 100%!

I have some experience in being “discretionary”, so I appreciate the fact that you will label the boxes differently.  In the past, I would have suggested “books” or “cheese”, but “diplomatic papers” works well and, frankly, sounds more official.

I will need to think carefully of the address to send this merchandise/cash bounty.  Please give me some time to reflect on this, Sgt. Joey.

To answer your questions, I do have a wife, but do not worry as I keep many things secret from her and only deem that she “know what she needs to know”, if you catch my drift.  I only speak to her sparingly.  I am a business man, but also a gentleman of leisure, with much success in life, so believe me, I can handle your funds regardless the amount (preferably a large one, LOL!).

I am hesitant at first to send you a passport right off - I agree, trust needs to be established.  I believe you, Sgt. Joey - is there a way you could send me your credentials?

Can I turn off a Drobo during data protection?

Yes, apparently you can. I inserted a new drive into my Drobo this weekend, and when I realized that the data protection process was going to last *48 hours* (!!!), I decided to just give it a shot (since I needed to shut down my Mac Pro), and install a new UPS.

Once the Drobo was powered back up, it went back to work setting up the new disk.

Import/Export within Amazon S3

More and more services these days are using Amazon S3 as their back-end for data storage. For example, Vimeo, the video service I’ve selected for the upload, storage and delivery of my videos.

While I’m comfortable using services like Vimeo, I would be even more comfortable if it became standard practice for them and everyone else to provide data import/export services to and from my own personal Amazon S3 account.

Say I want to move from Vimeo to another video provider, or say Vimeo go bankrupt—Since I already have a personal Amazon S3 account, it doesn’t make sense that I should have to download my 100s of GB of video data, and then upload it all again somewhere else. Vimeo should be able to simply move it all from their account into mine (or better yet, source it from mine in the first place) at my request.

External 1GB disk finally encrypted.

Early last week I disconnected my PGP Whole Disk Encrypted external Time Machine drive without ejecting it. Corruption ensued, and I had to reformat and re-encrypt the drive.

As I no longer have an 8-processor Mac Pro around, I had to encrypt the drive with my meagre (yet beloved) MacBook.

Five working days later (40 hours), the drive encryption has finally completed.

Lesson: Do not—and I mean Do Not!—forget to eject a PGP encrypted drive before disconnecting!
